RELEASE INFO This album finds LSP in very varied mood. From the Drum and Bass dubby title track to the Wailers sounding No Dreads the Hip Hop influenced Crooks In The Business and the techno flavoured Working In The Jungle. Displacing a quick wit and rapid tongue...this album displays a remarkable performance. When most folks his age are in retirement or babysitting grandchildren, Mr. Perry is on stage springing around like a teenager and writing lyrics to a variety of styles. Touching on contemporary figures such as Puff Daddy, Mr. Perry also confirms that he knows all the "crooks in the business",but he is keeping a Techno Party and many will not be there, but the obeah man will be there !!! Music by Baby Dread, Mafia & Fluxy, Mad Professor and Tagati. |

WHAT FANS SAY Newsgroups : rec.music.reggae Subject: Dr. Lee's Techno Party Date: Thu, 8 Jun 2000 18:52:40 -0400 From: Christopher Durning OK, I'm a Lee P fan. Dr. Lee is the shit as far as I'm concerned. I'm also a Mad Profesor fan, I figure Mad P is one dub genius. So I like Techno Party very much, in fact better than the recent "On The Wire" CD (Trojan Records). In fact I'm beginning to think it's one of my favorite post Ark Perry releases (next to "Experryments" and "Secret Lab"). The title track is a wacked take on "Punky Reggae Party". There are also grumbling, psychotic takes on "Who Colt The Game" and "I Know A Place", the former driven by a very fat bassline. "This Old Man" and "My Name Is" are nominally Techno, but sound more like reggae techno fusion, like reggae on an acid trip. There are also the very Perry revenge-lyric tunes (e.g "Crooks Ina De Business"). The mix sounds different to me than most of Mad P's work with Perry. It definitely gives the impression that Perry did some of the engineering as claimed in the liner notes. For example Perry's stream-of-consciousness vocals are set back compared to other Ariwa releases so they don't dominate and in a number of tunes there is a thick treble overlayer that gives a shimmer, reminds me of Perry's liberal use of high hat and phasing in the Black Ark. There are also dissonent tweaks in a number of tunes using an electronic bike horn (?) (e.g. "My Name Is") that are pure Lee Scratch Perry, very much like in his live shows. I won't deny there are duff tracks on this CD, like almost *all* collections of Lee P vocals. But for sure this CD has more than one moment where the old man is maestro; he makes a strange brew that sticks in yer brain. Recommended for the Perry fans!! |
