Wednesday, June 12th 2002, Red Devil Lounge: Mad Professor and Ariwa Dub Poets; $15 (they said it would be 14; plus they said it would start at 8 and it started at 11:30 but he played till 2 without breaks and only stopped at 2:30 when the house got frantic on him). A great set with an Alesis 24 track hard disc, small rack of effects and a (backline?) mackie 34 channel vlzr series board. Two female singers ("Jayzik" and "Zakeya", the latter especially good on dj style) and one guy (the "Panafrikanist") on steel pan. Everything was stupendous except the pan ruined three songs. Prof in fine form, everysong dubwize, and then a long dub version tacked on the end of each song! The beats and the tones were fantastic. A couple with Burning Spear. Some oldies and some newbies. Zakeya's "Bible", & "Mad" were as good as any Prof, hey as good as any reggae I've ever seen live. Anyone who objects to the lack of a live band should go soak his head. This is different and the tones are as clean as anything you'll hear, with the added bonus that the prof can control (i.e. dub) that much more completely when they're tracks playing back. The place was packed, itthinned some as the evening wore on. Prof has the drums on one fader, then (left to right on the board) congas, then riddim instruments (guitars and keys) all one one fader, then bass, then 4 more tracks which varied from song to song, a lead guitar, a flute, horns, etc. That was pretty consistently the arrangement one music to the next, then, traveling further right across the board, the 5 mics (he and the three others had vocal mics and the pan was mic'd) and then effects returning on their own channels. The effects were a great deep reverb, tons of echo and some pitch shift, the latter usually on vox but once on the bass at one point to grrrreeeattt effect. In past shows prof has been relatively dis-engaged, tonite he was on it the whole time, tweaking, dubbing, dancing and even singing (doubling key words on the choruses)·.a great show, once again reminding us why he's a legend. Review by Flex. November 8th 2001 : ***Lee Scratch in the American flag**Mad Prof**AUSTIN***. If being passionate is a sign of madness, the MAD PROFESSOR should reserve a room at the best musical asylum. In fact, reserve a space for me, too! I could listen to him all night long. The nearly sold out show in Austin (last night) was better than I hoped for. Although, I, too, am not a huge fan of Lee Scratch as a performer, I totally respect his history and abilities as a producer. Although he was late to arrive, I thought Lee was in a particularly good and creative mood. They have been in Austin since Saturday, so I think they were really ready to give us a good show. He caught my attention right from the start since he came in through the back door and marched straight out to the stage dressed head to toe in an American flag. OF course, he still had his shiny alien shoes and hat, and I HAD TO LAUGH... With so much flag waving lately, his style was the 'piece de resistance' so to speak. He mentioned being God a few times and even though he may be thought of as non-sensical at times, after all the seriousness of the past month, it was welcome comic relief backed with some of the best dub engineering in the world. By the way, there is a new cd called "Techno Party" and check out track two called Armegedeon War. It is very timely and well done. I spent a few hours with Neil Fraser the day before listening to his patient answers to all my questions about dub past, dub present and dub future. He was patient, articulate, and a wonderful spirit. I will transcribe the interview soon with pictures (And pics of LSP in his American flag!) One suggestion, don't eat chicken wings during an interview. Neil offered me one and just touching my lips made my mouth catch a fire, my eyes tear down my face, my throat close up with serious revenge, and I couldn't talk for about ten minutes. Neil hardly noticed as he ate the rest witht total ease. He must eat Scotch Bonnets as snacks! Neil had many great insights about the state of today's music. It's in trouble. The one thing I remember most from the interview is when he said "Music must become more intelligent." I couldn't agree more. Big up to the Ariwa crew...and thanks for touring in these difficult times. Also big up to the Austin massive for coming out and supporting the artists! PEACE and LOVE, Sis Irie. |

April 28th - May 16th 2000, US / Canada tour featuring Mad Professor, Macka B and Nolan Irie. Reviews taken from "rec.music.reggae" So I just got back (well, not really... I'm in Boston still) from seeing Mad Professor at the higher ground in Winooski, Vermont. This is the third time I've seen the Professor live, and this was definitely the best of them. I dont think the set list was as strong as when I saw his tour last year; I missed hearing his older stuff, and a few wicked tunes from the 'Lost Scrolls Of Moses', but the energy more than made up for it. The Professor was in fine style, grinning ear to ear, and dancing around behind his mixing board for most of the night. He did encore after encore, and really appeared to be having a great time. That's what made this show special for me. "Graham C Prud'homme" The Professor brought his live dub studio to Styleen's Friday night (5/5/2000) and gave a short performance. He is touring with a techno (?) band and trying to reach out to a different crowd. There was a different crowd at the show and they seemed to enjoy the band going on and on until midnite with what sounded to these ears as the same song over and over again, but what do I know about that type of music. Macka B was not there which was a disappointment. Eventually the Prof came on with Nolan Irie on the mike. Rather than the continuous performance one might have expected, they would do one tune talk a while and do another. Included were some tracks from a forthcoming release and covers of tunes from U2 and Blondie. The Professor often appeared to be going through the motions and the house sound system couldn't handle the bass whenever they tried to crank it up. I enjoyed seeing the Professor and have to say that the cross-over type show is the only way they could hope to draw a crowd in this area, but it was not what I really wanted. "Andread" Thurs, May 11, $15: Justice League. Prof and his ADAT/Mackie rig, Macka B and some other DJ who's id escaped me...Place relatively full, but not sold out. Mostly white crowd, surprisingly mixed gender-wize. Missed all the opening bands. Prof hit it at midnite, I had to leave at 1:33, he was still going very strong. (but this was into his encore). Some new, some old. A Rankin' Ann, I believe, and some jungle. His homemade timebased delay was creating his patented "bwoooiiiinnkks", he seemed to have it on an aux send cause he was using a lot of wrist action, twisting knobs in addition to the fader stuff. Very, very good, I prefer when he's on adats versus dubbing a band, he has more control and it tends to be cleaner, more classic dub. "Dispatch from SF" |

March 6th - March 24th 2001, US TOUR : Lee 'Scratch' Perry... Mad Professor and the Sane Inmates.
Reviews taken from "rec.music.reggae" Wed, March 7 : Well just saw Scratch at the House of Blues in Hollywood, what a show. That guy can always pull something out if his hat. Version lady's and gentleman version. open door, curly locks, introducing myself, crooks in the business, roast fish......this is by no means a set list but it goes on and on. His band was a little raw I think it was the only California show and first on the tour, but they were great! Drums, bass and keys no guitar and of coarse Mad Professor at the board. "Batcharoid". |

May 25th 2001 : Lee 'Scratch' Perry in Tel Aviv.
(First Review ...more will come soon) To tell you the truth bredrins I was abit afraid before scratch's show in Tel Aviv. After all, rarely we have opportunities to meet a legend in action, and there is no greater disappointment then the one from a legend. But the bottom line is that scratch was in a great mood that evening, which means he was in great shape for the performance. To make my picture complete, first let me give you some details about his physical appearence. He wore army trousers, cheap t shirt with his majesty's icon on it, a hat, and a fashionable bag, not exactly the looks of a 65 year old chap, but love it or not this is scratch. Scratch was accompanied by a band called the "sane inmates" which consists of 3 guys who play bass, drum and keyboards, and on the console there was the mad proffesor, perry's partner for the last years, who added some crucial echoes to perry's voice and to the rolling drums. Perry and the proffesor did wisely when they chose to concentrate in playing mostly late stuff from their collaborations. This is the appropriate selection when you have the limits of a small band, and perry sure knew how to deal with it. An interesting thing was that the upsetter sang different lyrics to the known rhythms. When I asked some people for their opinion about it, one said that the man has such a continuos float of lyrics, that he can freely improvise whatever he likes. Yet another told me that probably due to the execessive use of weed he simply doesn't remember his original texts. My opinion is that scratch, who used to be a master in creation of numerous dub versions to the same rhythms, has now become a lyrical expert, creating new lyrical versions to rhythms. Scratch has got the qualities of a great performer. Besides his ability to impovise lyrics, he has terrific timing when he puts his lyrics on the rhythm, and he surely knows a thing or two about how to do the reggeaaaa. He proved it when he excellentaly performed two of marley's tunes at the end. The only weak moment during the show was the version of " War inna babylon ", a classic that it seems no one can reproduce. Another thing that made this act so precious was the mutual positive vibrations between perry and the crowd. The crowd just loved him and he sent back love. One funny moment was when scratch lighted his first in a series of spliffs, combined with a warning against the " cigarette government " and the crowd responsed with a bunch of burning spliffs made in israel. The upsetter has also tipped our government with an actual suggestion " don't send no boom 'cause it will get back on you " great offer to fuad, ain't it? To sum it up we had a rare opportunity to listen and see a terrific and gifted performer, who I hope we will be able to see again in zionland in the coming future. |
